Captain Adrian (aka Jack Sparrow)

Attila

Friday April 3 to Wednesday April 8 we spent aboard Attila making our way to South America. We started in the San Blas Islands via a 4WD from Panama City. There were 5 of us in the front of the truck and about 7 Panamanians in the back. Crazy trip! Once arriving in the San Blas we were escorted to Attila where we met Captain Adrian, a crazy Hungarian. Adrian had one crew member, Kurt, and there were three others besides us on this 1977 34' Hans Christian Cutter Sailboat. The San Blas Islands (Kuna Yala) consists of about 360 islands. Many, more than half, are uninhabited, others are occupied by the Kuna Indians. They live in huts and multiple family members are usually in each hut. On some of the islands they have built accomodations for tourists. The islands that Adrian took us too, however see few tourists. He is quite good friends with several of the Kuna's. The first day (Friday), we spent the day on Isla Nalungea. The Kuna's showed us around the island and cooked a late lunch of fish, rice, salad, (and rabbit). We spent the whole afternoon there hanging out and some of our friends played with the kids. Saturday we spent the majority of the day at Isla Moron, one of the vacant islands. Sunday, more of the same, beach, sun swim, snorkel, eat. Monday early AM began the 50 hour sail to Cartagena. It was quite an unforgettable experience! I'll spare you the details of the sail and just post some pics now.
