The drive from Salta to Purmamarca, Argentina

Fun pictures at the salt flats.

Salina Grandes. The Salt Flats of Argentina.

A friendly indigenous lady and her dogs. She was sitting at a watering hole knitting and watching her sheep. We stopped to chat with her...the best that we could.

Llamas along the road. We were told we could stop and take pictures. These particular ones are apparently somewhat domesticated. They could have cared less that we stopped our car on the side of the road and walked up to them.

This is the door to the restaurant. It is made of cactus wood (cardon). They use this wood in Argentina (as well as Bolivia we have recently learned) for doors, roof decking, and for decorate items such as picture frames/light fixtures/etc.

An indigenous settlement along the way also. They have a cafe and a museum for tourist to stop in, visit, and see how they live. They live in adobe houses, but still don't go without a satelite.

An old adobe homestead along the route.

Near Santa Rosa de Tastil. Pre-Inca Ruins.

While in Salta we were able to arrange a 2-day trip to continue north as we wanted and visit some interesting Argentine places along the way. We arranged to get a rental car to drive one way and not have to return it. We stopped at several places along the way, ending in the town of Purmamarca to spend the night on the first night.
