July 20 – July 24

After leaving Tikal, Guatemala we continued on crossing the next border into Belize. Belize was a British Colony until the early 1980s, therefore “English” is the first language, however they speak in English Creole which is almost as hard to understand as another language is. It was a bit of a shock for us crossing over after 5 months of traveling through Latin America. All the signs are in English and speed limits in mph. Another interesting side note, the population of Belize is around 300,000 now and during the height of the Mayan civilization in this area it is predicted that the population was around 1 million. The first night we stayed in the small town of Santa Elena, not far from the border. Tuesday we decided to take a short 10 minute flight to the small island of Caye Caulker to spend the rest of our time in Belize. The 2nd largest barrier reef in the world is off the coast of Belize. We did two dives while we were there.
