Chichén Itzá

The Rain God, Chac

The feathered serpent was a common part of the motif.

The Mayan “box seats” for watching the game.

A ball court was usually part of these sites. There were two teams and the object was to get a ball through this raised stone hole. The game could go on for days, and some believe that the captain of the winning team rather than the losing team was sacrificed. This was believed to have been an honor since they believed in reincarnation.

Chichén Itzá is the most famous of the Yucatan Mayan sites and one of the new seven wonders of the world. The Pyramid of Kukulkán or El Castillo (the main pyramid) is actually a large Mayan calendar.
