
A species of agave, named henequen. It used to be grown all over the Yucatan and used to make sisel rope. Now it cannot compete with synthetic ropes and it is used primarily for artesanías (local handicrafts) and some rope. Other species of agave in other parts of Mexico are used to make tequila and mezcal.

Mérida is the historic cultural city of the Yucatán Peninsula. It is full of plaza’s, artesanías, churches, museums. It is also famous for hammocks, traditional Maya clothing such as the huipiles (embroidered dresses) and the guayabera shirts.
